Katie Love will run the South Coast Challenge 100K as her auntie lives with fibromyalgia. This is a second part of Katie’s blog, where she tells us about the preparation to the run: ‘’The 2 month countdown to the South Coast Challenge 60 miler and slight panic !
With only 2 months and a couple of days to go till the big day, I had a slight panic that I may need to start training. Due to a lot of worries of being in too much pain, over training and loosing confidence , I mentally closed the door on doing any mileage over 10 miles as I wanted to "preserve" myself for the big day, so instead I stuck to the gym and cycling. Unfortunately although this may help with fitness it will not put mileage in the old pins ( my face was a picture at that moment and not a happy one) so I had to start and so I did with doing 15 miles across the downs last weekend with my running club RunWednesdays. During the run I felt ok, not strong, but ok. It was to be expected as it was the furthest I have been in a very long time.
My next focus was to up the mileage....what the hell was I thinking but I knew I needed to do it if I have any chance of finishing the SDW challenge before 2020 ! So it was to be the dreaded Falmer to Eastbourne run which clocks up to about 22-24 miles, The last time I did this it physically broke me, I couldn't move properly for over a week, every nerve in my body hurt, every joint felt like they were made out of chalk, every tendon and ligament on fire, I also had no energy and felt unwell, it honestly and truly was one of the hardest things I had to cope with mentally. Going from training really well and confidence growing with not many body issues to suddenly get a car crash worth in one hit, I never ever normally avoid doing something again but this was one I could happily avoid. However my coach is amazing and believed with the right guidance and help would see me overcome this obstacle.
So the day came that me, Danny my coach and some RW crew set off via train to Falmer ......well it may have been faster running to Falmer and back, due to standing on the wrong train platform for a good 30 mins! Fear not we finally got on the correct train to Falmer !Yay! I was nervous, anxious and dreading what the outcome may be, planning a swift evacuation with my dad prior to the run if all goes horribly wrong which I thought was a 100% chance of happening. But it didn't, I felt really strong and was actually really enjoying myself. Every step was progress and not excruciating and covering every mile with some of the most amazing supportive people in my life. And I got back with 24 miles under my belt with only a few niggles, I was super chuffed and I knew that if I run like I did that day I could do the 60 miles and do them well. Now it would be a waiting game to see how my body coped and it did managed another 4 miles with my doggie Barkley, it was slow and steady but to be able to run let alone walk this time was amazing and I am at this moment looking forward to completing the South coast challenge! I know it won’t all go as well as it has done these past two weeks but as long as I have faith and look after myself and carry on learning and training with my Running family RW I can do it.
I will be running the 60 mile (100k) South Coast Challenge on 27th/28th August for two amazing causes very close to my heart. Please if you can donate to my JustGiving page. I would be truly grateful xx
