Press Release Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day 12th May 2008 |
Fibromyalgia is a painful, non-articular condition predominantly
involving muscle; it is the most common cause of chronic, widespread
musculoskeletal pain and affects between 2%-3% of the UK population.
Fibromyalgia Association UK will be holding a coffee morning at
Portcullis House Westminster on 12th May to promote Fibromyalgia
International Awareness Day. Our aim is to make MPs aware of how
desperate the situation is for so many fibromyalgia sufferers living in
their constituencies. We need to let MPs know of the day to day
struggles sufferers battle against just to lead as near ‘normal’ a life
as possible. We need their help and support.

BSR/BHPR Conference (Liverpool April 2008) |
|
As members of ARMA, FMA UK were invited to have a stand at the British
Society of Rheumatology and British Health Professions Rheumatology
joint annual conference held this year at the new Arena Centre in
Liverpool. It took place between the 21st and the 25th April 2008.
This is the primary conference for rheumatology health professionals in
Britain and the potential to promote fibromyalgia awareness in this
area of medicine was important. We needed literature suitable for professionals so the office in
Stourbridge were very busy in the few weeks before, preparing booklets
with some of Devin Starlanyl’s guidance on FM and Myofascial pain. The
front cover was professionally printed in our corporate colours of
yellow and black and made a very pleasing presentation.

This month MAB member, Dr Kim Lawson, gives his comments to the
government’s response to the e-petition for better education for
doctors on fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome.
In the Spotlight we have Anne Mills, who tells her story about living
with FM and what inspired her to publish a set of e-booklets that help
others find the help and advice they need.
With best wishes,
Kathy Longley (FMA UK Editor)(Subscribe to FaMily Magazine to get more of these articles)

What is an All Party
Parliamentary Group?
An All Party Parliamentary
Group (APPG) consists of backbench Members of the House of Commons and/or House
of Lords from more than one political party and is established to examine issues
that are non-contentious in party political terms. An APPG can draw attention to certain aspects
of public affairs and assist in keeping the Government informed of
parliamentary opinion. It may also act
as a pressure-group to promote a specific cause, such as fibromyalgia. An
APPG is not controlled by the party whips and each Group must have a minimum of
20 parliamentarians from both the government party and the official opposition
with Officers elected annually.
What is the
purpose of the APPG on fibromyalgia?
To raise awareness of the condition amongst opinion formers and
decision makers at Westminster
and the wider community.
