International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day – 12th May 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Do you ever wonder how the profile of Fibromyalgia can be raised?

Do you ever wonder who actually tries to raise the profile of Fibromyalgia?

Well the answer could be right on your doorstep!

Image As most people are aware FMA UK is run by their board of trustees who do their utmost to raise the profile of Fibromyalgia (along with many other things), this cannot always be done without the support of the sufferers.

Group leaders (of whom the majority are sufferers themselves) and their members across the country also work tirelessly to raise the profile within their own area, again, this cannot be done without the support of the sufferer.
This is where you yourself come in. On 12th May it is International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. Last year we held our first National Coffee Mornings around this date, entitled ‘Raise Your Cups for Awareness’. This resulted in many groups and individuals taking part in coffee mornings across the country, including one held in the Houses of Parliament!

We aim to make this an annual event and try to encourage as many people as possible to support these events. You don’t have to do anything too big, just maybe a coffee morning with friends and family around. We all know how many people struggle to get their friends and family to understand, so why not try by inviting them round and have some information available? You could maybe invite your local Health Care Professional along, as well as your local MP?

Maybe you still work and could hold a coffee morning in your workplace. This could also help your colleagues understand your illness more.

If you can’t do this yourself why not ask a member of your family or friends to help you, many of you have young children and attend playgroups, nurseries etc. Why not hold one there? It’s surprising how many places we visit that we could try and do this, all with the thought that you are raising awareness of your illness.

Last year we were able to provide refreshments to many people as a major tea company donated teabags, and another company donated other refreshments. We are currently in the process of contacting these companies again, as well as trying to find a sponsor for the events.

Please do and try to support us with this venture, we cannot do it alone, and as I’m sure you will agree raising awareness of Fibromyalgia is a priority.
