Do You Struggle to Find Travel Insurance? PDF Print E-mail

Having a pre-existing medical condition like fibromyalgia can make it difficult to secure comprehensive travel insurance at a reasonable premium. You can be penalised for taking medications, being on a hospital waiting list or having more than one illness, leading to astronomical premiums, huge excesses or even a refusal to cover you at all.

Due to these problems some travellers, understandably, often avoid sharing their medical history and end up travelling uninsured, leaving the gate open to some frightening situations. Did you know that in the USA, for example, it can cost up to £5,000 per day just for your bed, before you have even seen a doctor? You simply can't afford to travel uninsured, but how do you find a reasonable deal with a reputable firm?

Does Fibromyalgia Affect Eyesight? PDF Print E-mail

Eye Problems?"Everything is slightly blurred, sort of misty, as if you are looking through a mild fog," Rifka told me. "The symptoms started slowly and at first weren't there all the time, it would be blurry one day and then it would go for a few days, but now it is a permanent thing and I simply can't focus clearly. I also have these terrible dry eyes, and wake up in the morning feeling as though my eyes are full of sand, stuck together and gritty."

A small tribute to Neil (own2feet) PDF Print E-mail

Neil, an active participant on the FMA UK Forum, sadly passed away earlier this year. He will be sorely missed, especially for his humour and constant encouragement. We dedicate this magazine to his memory.

Dedications from forum members

“Neil supported me in the past with thoughtful and encouraging PM's [personal messages], and was always so humorous and funny, but also deeply caring and thoughtful. We have lost a true gentleman. He will be deeply missed.” (MOAL61)

“I was very sad to hear of Neil's passing away. While he had a lot on his plate, he always managed to make me laugh with his many and various posts. I would like to say on behalf of the Board of Trustees of FMA UK that we offer our condolences and sympathy to all his family.” (Roger Vice Chair & Treasurer, FMA UK)

How Can I Help My Child With Fibromyalgia? PDF Print E-mail

Picture of children with their backs to the cameraAny parent who sees their child suffering wants to help, it is a natural instinct we all have. If a child falls over and cuts their knee you can respond by kissing it better and giving them a hug to assure them that everything is okay and it will heal quickly. But what do you do if you start to see the signs and symptoms of some underlying health problem? How should you react and how do you know if it is fibromyalgia?

The “No Oh No" Cycle PDF Print E-mail

Dr Martin Pall, a professor of biochemistry and basic medical sciences at Washington State University in America, is proposing that the illnesses chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity and post-traumatic stress disorder could all share the same underlying cause. We all know that there is plenty of overlap between these conditions and if you are diagnosed with one you are more than likely to have symptoms of another; just like many people have fibromyalgia with many of the symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity.

Pulled, prodded and cracked PDF Print E-mail

The words pulled, prodded and cracked certainly used to summarise my idea of osteopathy and chiropractic treatment. I couldn't understand why anyone would actually want to pay to have a therapist stick their thumbs into your tender and bruised muscles or pull you into unheard of positions in order to crack your joints as though you were a rag doll! Surprisingly, when I actually went to see an osteopath for the first time, I discovered they could be quite gentle creatures and not the embodiment of my nightmares.

Second Letter for ENFA declaration PDF Print E-mail
Subject:  Written Declaration on Fibromyalgia No. 69/2008

Dear Honourable Member of the European Parliament,

I have been informed that a declaration on the condition fibromyalgia was proposed on September the 1st 2008. Declaration No. 69/2008 asks for more awareness of the consequences of Fibromyalgia.  It has been proposed and supported by ENFA which is a network of European National Fibromyalgia associations.

While a great many Members of the European Parliament have signed this declaration so far, I believe that you have still to do so,  according to the Fibromyalgia Association UK (FMA UK) website (http://www.fmauk.org/enfa).  I am guessing it is just an omission on your part and I am looking forward in the coming week to seeing your name being linked to the support of the EP written declaration.
